From HOTs to Self-Representing States

چکیده

According to David Rosenthal, a mental state is conscious just in case its subject suitably represents herself as being in that state, where this entails that the mental state " is accompanied by a noninferential, nondispositional, assertoric thought to the effect that one is in that very state " (2002a, p. 410; see also Rosenthal, 1997, p. 742). This assertoric thought, since it is about another mental state, is a higher-order thought (HOT). Let us use 'HOTm' for a HOT that is about mental state m (where m is, say, visually representing something as being blue). The claim is that m's being conscious consists in its being suitably represented by HOTm. Rosenthal requires that HOTm be a different state from m, so that m does not represent itself. This is because, he says, " Absent some reason to the contrary, distinct mental functions call for distinct states " 1997, p. 738). So the represented mental state, m, the one of which the subject is conscious, is not the representing state by means of which she is thus conscious. When a state is conscious, then, there are really two states: the consciousness-conferring state, HOTm, and the state on which consciousness is conferred, m. I will argue that there is a good " reason to the contrary " for saying that both the first-order and the higher-order contents are carried by the same state, a self-representing state. 1 This reason arises from the possibility that HOTm misrepresents m (a source of

Unity of Consciousness and the Self

The so-called unity of consciousness consists in the compelling sense we have that all our conscious mental states belong to a single conscious subject. Elsewhere I have argued that a mental state's being conscious is a matter of our being conscious of that state by having a higher-order thought (HOT) about it. Contrary to what is sometimes argued, this HOT model affords a natural explanation o...

A nucleolar protein, H19 opposite tumor suppressor (HOTS), is a tumor growth inhibitor encoded by a human imprinted H19 antisense transcript.

The H19 gene, which localizes within a chromosomal region on human chromosome 11p15 that is commonly lost in Wilms tumor (WT), encodes an imprinted untranslated RNA. However, the biological significance of the H19 noncoding transcript remains unresolved because replacement of the RNA transcript with a neocassette has no obvious phenotypic effect. Here we show that the human H19 locus also encod...

Higher-Order Thought and the Problem of Radical Confabulation

Currently, one of the most influential theories of consciousness is Rosenthal’s version of higher-order-thought (HOT). We argue that the HOT theory allows for two distinct interpretations: a one-component and a two-component view. We further argue that the two-component view is more consistent with his effort to promote HOT as an explanatory theory suitable for application to the empirical scie...

Integrating HOTS Activities with GeoGebra in Pre-Service Teachers’ Preparation

High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are suggested today as essential for the cognitive development of students and as preparing them for real life skills. Teachers are encouraged to use HOTS activities in the classroom to help their students develop higher order skills and deep thinking. So it is essential to prepare preservice teachers to write and use HOTS activities for their students. This pa...

HOTS: An OWAMP-Compliant Hardware Packet Timestamper

Accurate timestamps on both the sender and the receiver side are crucial for one-way delay (OWD) measurements. Traditionally, the methods of (i) peering with NTP servers, and (ii) connecting to a time source directly, have been used to maintain the accuracy of a measurement system clock. However, it has became clear that such methods suffer from errors to different extents. In this paper, we in...
